I bought this on ebay to replace the one that didn't make it in our move across the country, so I guess we were willing to buy the book again, but not necessarily at full price. We found the diet to really work but wish there were more dinner recipes as we don't care for fish so that limits us some. Very easy to follow directions for even a beginner (cook or dieter). The food is actually very tasty and use a lot of seasonings normally. All of the recipes I made require fresh veggies so I was visiting the grocery store quite a bit! There are a few ingredients I had to search a couple of stores for as they made be carried in a regular grocery store (not the ones I go to anyway) but well worth it for the outcome. I put good instead of excellent only because of the price but that is just because I have a hard time spending $30 on a book ;) and I would like to see more recipes as I am not very creative coming up with things on my own. Great book, great diet, see results fairly quickly even for someone who has a hard time losing weight but is very conscious about doing it in a healthy way but I am sure that all depends on your body!Read full review
I bought this book because both my husband, a diabetic, and myself needed simple, plain, and better eating habits. Eating more vegetables, not just fruit, has been our most difficult task. Deep, green leafy vegetables is great for men and women. There is nothing appealing, off-hand, about Bok Choy or Swiss Chard. I’ll go to peas, corn, anything else. The South Beach diet gives choices, and recipes that not only are appealing, but make the unappealing appealing and palatable. And to make it all so much better, the recipe requirements and time requirements are reasonable. I am glad there are recipes that are easy, and quick to make. I’m also glad there are recipes with ingredients I’ve scantly seen or heard of. Once in awhile, I’m up for a challenge and ready to try something different and new. When considering buying a cookbook, and I have quite a few, consider this one for its ease of use, variety spectrum, and health considerations. One won’t be disappointed with this one.Read full review
I bought this book along with the New Mayo Clinic Cookbook when I decided to change my eating habits to eat more fruits and veggies each day. Actually, of the two cookbooks, I found more recipes I wanted to try in the Mayo Clinic book. Still, the South Beach cookbook shows that the diet is anything but dull and boring. There are a variety of choices in this cookbook, so no matter what you like to eat, you will find recipes that appeal to you. Even those who aren't dieting should find this cookbook helpful for making better choices when cooking. When I'm considering buying a cookbook, I look for a variety of recipes that look appealing, that are simple to make, and that don't have "odd" ingredients that might be difficult to find. This cookbook met all my criteria. I consider myself a good cook, with simple tastes. So I must warn that some recipes seemed a bit outlandish, or listed ingredients that are obscure or difficult to find. But I am not disappointed, and I don't think you'll be disappointed in this book: it contains many recipes, dozens of them, that only include items you almost certainly have on hand. To reduce the stress in my life, I try not to cook more than 2 or 3 new recipes a week. So I haven't tried many recipes from this cookbook yet, but the ones I have tried have been easy to follow, quick to make, tasty and satisfying.Read full review
I decided to buy this cookbook, along with the diet book on the recommendation of my OB/GYN. She diagnosed me with PCOS. The diet seems like a reasonable compromise. It's still healthy, unlike Atkins or similar high protein high fat diets. It emphasizes complex carbohydrates, healthy fats and lean meats. The cookbook is really good, giving you lots of options for keeping the diet new and interesting, so you don't get bored. The one problem I had with it, is most of the recipes seem very complicated. I used to like cooking like that, but with two small children, I don't have the time to cook like that every day. Still, for special occasions, it's nice to have other options.
This a great companion book to the South Beach Diet Book. If you follow the recite in the first part. Stage 1 you will lose weight. It is a must to change your eating habits for life for it to do anyone any good. Everything tastes so good to me now and I have found all kinds of new ways to use vegetables. You must also learn to drink lots of water. And this book will help you learn to read food labels.
