My doctor recommened the South Beach Diet to me. I am very impressed with this book. I am not a diet person so this has been a experiece for me. This book is so easy to understand what types of food are good and bad for your body. There is no disikes of the book. It explains everything you need to know about carbs, good ,bad, and the ugly ! I have never read a book on a diet that was so filled with information that you need to know as this one does.
I decided to buy this book after talking with several people (men) who had lost a good amount of weight following the SBD. I found the book difficult to maneuver - eating programs were not well laid out, no list of acceptable foods, lots of recipes with odd+expensive ingredients that required fairly experienced cooking skills. Basically, I'm a "show me how to do it" person, and this book was all about reading a lot of information about dieting. I know the SBD has worked for many folks, and it's probably a great plan. It just isn't the right plan for me.
The diet was recommended by someone who has remained trimmed all her life and also was used by someone who lost a lot of weight over a few months. The diet allows for plenty of vegetables and salads (which I love) and plenty of low fat proteins, without the need for measuring portions. It also allowed for a glass of wine after the first phase, and I do love my glass of wine everyday. I've actually stuck to the more stringent first phase for over 4 weeks now, since my I've actually gotten used to eating no bread, pasta, or potatoes and have been eating mostly fresh vegetables. Overall, it is a diet which I am having no problem in maintaining, but again, I am stubborn and strong willed and determined not to have my cravings control me in staying fat. Most of all, it is a healthy diet (not like Atkin's!) which is also good for my skin, cholesteral levels and blood pressure.Read full review
Being overweight my doctor has been pushing me to loose weight. Not until he got on my wife's case also loose weight that I thought that it would be a good idea for both of us to be doing the same diet. That being said, we began phase I for two weeks and both of us lost weight. At the time I had taken out a library book on the diet and the time for it to be sent back was coming close. I have books to be sold on half.com and I have bought books also from half.com. I ordered the book and it came in the mail in one week just before I had to take the library book back. For the price of the book it was more conveinant to have the book at home for a longer period than three weeks the library give you. The book has list of things that are good to eat and not gain weight doing so. It guides you step by step in the diet process and also gives menus to follow, therefore taking most of the mistakes and fears out of the picture. In the first two weeks just eating the things that the book suggest I have lost 20 pounds. That can't be all bad!Read full review
